The Nigerian government has initiated systems of education intended to cater for the needs of both adults and young people, but the National Gross Enrolment Ration (GER) has remained only above 70% since 1996. Although the country recorded an overall GER of 81% in 1999 comprising 84% boys and 77% girls, the net attendance the same year was only 55% comprising 57% boys and 53% girls.
Seven million children remain out of school (with two-third of these being girls). The need attendance ratio of children aged 6-11 in primary school indicates a huge disparity in access to primary school education between the rural and urban and the northern and southern regions. These national figures mask huge and regional variations. The adult literacy rare stands at 49% and is poor especially among women (39%) and Nigeria still has over 50 million illiterate citizens.
We hope to Increase the rate of girls’ enrolment and completion of school by 40% in our project communities in the next five years, thereby enhancing the level of Adult literacy in target communities and give equal opportunities for girl-child and women in education, wealth creation and participation in decision-making processes.
